Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins just under the surface of the skin. They appear most often in the legs. While this can be uncomfortable for some patients, it is not considered a serious medical condition. Varicose veins result from the increase in blood pressure caused by blood pooling in the legs for extended periods.

Commonly known as “spider veins,” telangiectasia is a milder form of varicose veins. Telangiectasia happens when small blood vessels on the surface of the skin become widened. They are much smaller than varicose veins and have a spider web-like appearance. Like varicose veins, spider veins are not considered a serious medical condition.
The symptoms for spider veins are the same as varicose veins with one exception: telangiectasia can include an itching sensation around the affected area.
