Treatment plans for chronic, non-healing wounds depend on the nature of the wound. Initial steps include cleaning the wound with a saline solution and fresh dressing, debridement of dead or inflamed tissue, and covering the wound with a dressing that drains excess fluid. Your doctor may also prescribe you an antibiotic to help fight a bacterial infection.
If the wound persists, your doctor may suggest a more invasive procedure like negative pressure wound therapy or hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
When blood circulation is weak, venous ulcers can form. It’s important to promptly treat these wounds to avoid the development of gangrene or risk of limb loss.
