Some of the most important conversations about health happen far from a clinic. They happen on a riverbank, in the quiet of an early morning, with a fly rod in hand and cold water rushing past your boots. For Dr. Gregory Nissen, one of Dakota Vascular’s board-certified vascular surgeons, that image isn’t a metaphor — it’s a Saturday. An avid fly fisherman, Dr. Nissen has long understood that the rivers and wild spaces of South Dakota aren’t just beautiful — they’re essential to the kind of active, connected life that keeps people healthy. That’s why Dakota Vascular is proud to sponsor Dakota Trout Unlimited.
Trout Unlimited is a national nonprofit organization with more than 300,000 members dedicated to conserving, protecting, and restoring North America’s cold-water fisheries and the watersheds that sustain them. The Dakota chapter carries that mission into the heart of the Great Plains — working to preserve the rivers, streams, and natural spaces that South Dakotans and outdoor enthusiasts from across the region hold dear.
From stream restoration projects to youth fishing education and public lands advocacy, Trout Unlimited chapters like ours do the quiet, essential work that keeps wild places wild.
Our physicians and staff aren’t just vascular specialists — they’re members of this community. Dr. Nissen has spent years on South Dakota’s rivers, and he brings the same patience, precision, and deep respect for craft to fly fishing that he brings to the operating room. For him, this sponsorship is personal. “These are the waters I fish. These are the places I go to decompress, to think, and to reconnect,” he says. “Protecting them matters to me — not just as a fisherman, but as a physician who understands what time in nature does for a person’s health.”
There’s also a natural alignment between what we do clinically and what Trout Unlimited champions environmentally. Vascular health — the health of your arteries, veins, and circulatory system — is directly tied to how you live. Physical activity, time spent outdoors, stress reduction, and connection to nature are not incidental to good health. They are central to it.
The sport of fly fishing draws people out of sedentary routines, into natural environments, and into a form of mindful, active engagement that research consistently links to reduced blood pressure, lower stress hormones, and improved vascular function. We believe in what Trout Unlimited stands for because we see the results in our patients.
“Healthy rivers and healthy people aren’t separate goals. They’re part of the same story.”— Dr. Gregory Nissen, Vascular Surgeon, Dakota Vascular |
When Dakota Trout Unlimited advocates for clean water and protected watersheds, they’re advocating for the long-term health of our region — and for the generations of South Dakotans who will live, fish, and thrive here. At Dakota Vascular, we see that as directly aligned with our own mission: to provide world-class vascular care that helps patients live longer, more active, more fulfilling lives.
Sponsoring this work means more than writing a check. It means showing up — at community events, restoration projects, and conservation conversations — as a healthcare partner that is invested in the whole person and the whole community.
If you’re a patient, a neighbor, or simply someone who loves the Black Hills, the Dells, or the rivers that wind through eastern South Dakota, this sponsorship is for you. We want you to know that Dakota Vascular is not just here for your medical needs. We’re here as a community partner, committed to the outdoor spaces and shared values that make this region worth living in.
Follow Dakota Trout Unlimited’s events and volunteer opportunities through their local chapter, and look for Dakota Vascular at upcoming community events this season. Whether you’re an avid fly fisherman or just starting out, we’d love to see you on the water.
