Do you have a sore on your foot or leg that just will not seem to heal? Have you been told your circulation is too poor for healing, or that your options are limited?
For some patients, those words come with a recommendation they are not ready to accept. But a vascular evaluation sometimes opens a door that did not seem to be there.
That is exactly what happened for one of our patients, Dave, and his wife. Their story is one we are grateful to share because it reflects what vascular treatment outcomes can look like when the right care comes at the right time.
When a Wound Would Not Heal
Dave came to us with a foot infection and poor circulation. The healing process had stalled, and a provider he had been seeing suggested that amputation of his foot and part of his leg may be the necessary next step.
Dave was not willing to accept that as his only option.
His wife began researching alternatives. That search led them to hyperbaric oxygen therapy, where a nurse practitioner recognized that poor circulation might be at the root of the problem. That nurse practitioner reached out to our team at Dakota Vascular and connected Dave with Dr. Kelly.
That referral changed the course of his recovery.
Why Circulation Matters in Wound Healing
When blood flow to the lower limbs is reduced, wounds struggle to receive the oxygen and nutrients they need to close. This is especially common in patients managing diabetes, peripheral artery disease, or other vascular conditions.
Even the most attentive wound care can only go so far when circulation is the underlying issue. Addressing the blood flow itself is often what allows healing to begin.
At Dakota Vascular, we start with a thorough evaluation to determine whether poor circulation is contributing to a wound or other symptoms. When it is, we can often improve blood flow through minimally invasive procedures performed in an outpatient setting, with minimal downtime.
This is the kind of care that can change what recovery looks like.
“He saved my foot, he saved my leg, and improved my quality of life. He’s brilliant.”— Dave, Dakota Vascular patient |
From a Wheelchair to a Walker to a Cane
When Dave first came to Dakota Vascular, he was using a wheelchair. Over the course of his treatment and recovery, he moved to a walker and then to a cane.
That progression matters. Not just physically, but in terms of what daily life feels like. The ability to move through your home, to get outside, to feel less dependent on others. Those are the things that a return to circulation can make possible.
Dave described it as a real blessing. He spoke about the role of prayer, the teamwork between his care providers, and the hope that started to return as his recovery progressed.
His story is not about a dramatic cure. It is about coordinated care, an open door, and what becomes possible when the right specialists work together.
What the Care Experience Is Like for Families
Vascular conditions not only affect the patient. They affect the people who love them, sit in waiting rooms with them, and drive them to appointments.
Dave’s wife was with him every step of the way, and she had her own experience of what care at Dakota Vascular felt like. She shared that the office staff responded quickly when she called. The nurses were confident and thorough. That she was kept informed throughout Dave’s procedures, and that she knew immediately what to expect when it was time to take him home.
That kind of communication is not a small thing. When a family member is worried, clarity and responsiveness matter. We work to make sure that both patients and the people supporting them feel informed and supported throughout the process.
A Different Path May Be Worth Exploring
If you or someone you love has a wound that will not heal, poor circulation in the legs or feet, or has received a recommendation you are not sure about, a vascular evaluation may be a helpful next step.
Vascular treatment outcomes vary from patient to patient, and we cannot promise any specific result. What we can offer is a thorough evaluation, a clear explanation of what we find, and an honest conversation about the options available.
Dave’s path was not straightforward. But because a nurse practitioner made a phone call, and because his wife kept looking for answers, he found care that helped him move forward.
